News Alerts on Haiti
Sometimes, it takes a disaster to makes us face reality. The earthquake that hit Haiti on January of 2010 made the USA face the reality that Haitians need Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
The designation should have been extended to the Haitian people long ago.. It took a massive earthquake to make the President and his administration have the political will to extend this protection to the hundred of thousands of Haitians in the USA today.
Will it take another major catastrophe to enact Comprehensive Immigration Reform? I certainly hope that it does not. Over the past year, it is evident that Immigration is an issue within several key issues including: education, local law enforcement, national security, employment etc.
It is clearly so with Health Care Reform. Could you believe your eyes and ears when, during the President's address to the joint houses of Congress, a Representative called President Obama "liar" and all because of immigration? I was astonished!!!!!
This Saturday, as I watched CNN, I saw President Obama and Secretary Napolitano announce TPS for Haitians in the midst of the coverage of the earthquake . I was again astonished!!!! The USA's immigration policy is so important for the USA's leadership position in the world.
TPS does not unite families. TPS is not a long-term solution. It is a band-aid. Still, it provides some relief to the poeple of a nation facing a huge natural disaster. CIR does have the power to unite families and to be a cure for millions of undocumented in the USA today.
Let’s stop the band aids. Let’s stop waiting for disasters to hit before we issue band aids. It is not the solution. We need a cure. Comprehensive Immigration Reform is the cure.
